Literature Text

My love is a tree, solid and tall;
It isn’t a flower, so frail and small;
It’s bare and tough against the cold
Because the wind, so strong and old,
Had blown its blooms to distant lands
To wilt and die in your dear hands.
The home of this rough tree, you ask?
Is barren wasteland on all sides;
It’s a place where nothing grows,
A place when sunrays rarely show,
A place where even this one tree
Should not have grown to live and be.

But even if the ground is dry,
Even if the wind won’t die,
Even if the blooms are weak
And can’t grow big before they break,
Even if it’s cold and dark
And time has broken up its bark,
The tree will stay where it has roots,
Although in truth it longs to move.

If it grew beautiful and bright
In some green meadow full of light,
Then it would mean less than it does
As from its lonely love it starves.
